Hilton Head Island
Visitors to South Carolina often visit Hilton Head Island, full of vast plantations, rich agriculture, and haunting history. According to Hilton Head Island history, an English sea captain, William Hilton, visited South Carolina while on an expedition in search of lands suitable for settlement, and claimed the fertile island in 1663 for the British, to establish profitable plantations on its rich abundant soil. Hilton was not the first to discover South Carolina, as many European explorers had discovered it before him; Spanish sailors in 1525 named the South Carolina headland “la punta de Santa Elena”. Of course, the first settlers to the island, known as the lowlands of South Carolina, were thought to live there as early as 10,000 BC. Many relics and artifacts have been found since, representing these early Native Americans’ way of life. They are displayed in local museums and are a reminder of a time that existed long before true civilization came to inhabit the area .
Hilton Head Island is known for not only for its interesting historical past, but for its art and entertainment events as well. The performing arts are quite popular, including theater, music, and dance. The Self Family Arts Center is a showcase for entertainers to display their talents to the many visitors that come every year. The center also contains the Elizabeth Wallace Theater that holds live concerts regularly, presenting music from the big band era, jazz, blues, classical, rock, and pop-definitely something for everyone! For an exquisite display of fine art, the Walter Greer Gallery has an astounding assortment of everything from sculpture, to paintings, to surreal photographs covering every inch of wall and floor space. Art shows and other juried events occur around the year and display the rich culture abundant in this South Carolina community.
